The Calm Summer Playbook

The Back-to-School Reset

The transition from summer to school can feel abrupt for everyone. For kids — and often for parents — the rhythm of daily life changes almost overnight.

Don't Change Everything Overnight

Attempting a full reset at once overwhelms kids' nervous systems. Circadian researchers call this phase shifting — the body clock can move about 15 to 30 minutes per day without protest, but anything faster produces what is essentially jet lag.

Reintroduce school-year rhythms gradually in the final weeks of summer:

  • Bedtime adjustments (15 minutes per night)

  • Morning wake-up adjustments (15 minutes per morning)

  • Stricter screen boundaries day by day

Don't wait on school tasks until the last second

Back-to-school often arrives with an invisible avalanche — new forms, new schedules, transportation logistics. Getting everything on a shared list ahead of time eases stress and provides visibility across the family.
